Cobargo Hotel, back room
Thursday 20th October, 7.30pm
Tattie Jam offer a distinctive brew of songs, from dark ballads and protest songs to off-the wall humour, and tunes ranging from slow airs to driving Strathspeys and kinetic jigs and reels. Much of their material's given a playful or funky contemporary twist, with contrast provided by the odd starker a capella song or unaccompanied tune.
The material's a diverse but harmonious blend of reinterpreted songs and tunes plundered from the hugely rich Scottish tradition, and songs and tunes written by Ruaridh. Thoughtful arrangements and the fact both musicians harmonise vocals whilst playing elements of lead, rhythm and percussion give Tattie Jam a sound that's quite unmistakable, and consistently surprises new listeners with its size and scope. Ruaridh Pringle (vocals, guitar, tenor banjo, digeridoo, cittern, stomp-box & shakers) is presently based in Glasgow. He is an accomplished singer and musician with a highly distinctive style, as well as a prolific and prize-winning writer of both songs and traditional-style tunes. Though largely self-taught, he was also a student of Lews Castle College Benbecula's highly regarded course in Traditional Music, where he was taught by some of the best musicians in 'Celtic' music. Seylan Baxter from Milngavie near Glasgow, (vocals, acoustic cello, electric 5-string cello) is one of Scotland's best-known traditional cellists, having collaborated with several of the country's foremost artists. She performs regularly with Alaskan harper Cheyenne Brown, with whom she released the critically acclaimed album 2:forty in 2007. For more information about Tattie Jam, visit their website

The Yuin Folk Club proudly presents.......
Fred SmithCobargo Hotel (back room) Friday 6th May 7.30pm Singer songwriter Fred Smith has emerged over the last ten years as one of Australia’s most remarkable performing artists.
He has toured three continents, and released six acclaimed albums, interspersed with stints as a diplomat with Australian
military missions in Bougainville, Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. He is currently on leave from an assignment in Oruzgan province in Southern Afghanistan where he was working with Townsville’s 1 RAR Battalion.Smith’s songs reflect his experiences in the some of the world’s more difficult places - most recently, a number of songs including Dust of Uruzgan, based on the experiences of two 1 RAR soldiers working there. He also popped out a comic tune called ‘Niet Swaffelen op de dixie’ warning the Dutch soldiers co-located with the ADF in Oruzgan province not to do unspeakable things in the portaloo. The song is apparently a hit on the military base in Tarin Kowt.
It was his ability to mix imagination with real world experience that caught the attention of critics. His 2002 CD Bagarap Empires, which draws on his experiences in war-torn Bougainville Island, was described in the Melbourne Age as ‘a stunning marriage of ethereal poetry and hard-nosed realism’. Fred became famous on Bougainville after working with local musicians and the Australian Army to release a ‘Songs of Peace’ cassette, 20,000 copies of which were released around the island.
‘Smith is a superb songwriter with a wry sense of humour and a wonderful eye for the idiosyncrasies of modern life’ (Bruce Elder, SMH, Nov 2007).
He also lived in the United States for three years touring on the North American circuit.
He teamed up with the Spooky Men’s Chorale to release a collection of thinking man’s drinking songs called ‘Urban Sea Shanties’. Entry: Members $10, Non-members $12
